Leucippus is named by most sources as the originator of the theory that the universe consists of two different elements, which he called 'the full' or 'solid,' and 'the empty' or 'void'. Both the void and the solid atoms within it are thought to be infinite, and between them to constitute the elements of Three major points can be made about Democritus' epistemology on the basis of Aristotle's and Theophrastus' testimony. First, when Aristotle describes Democritus as 'making appearances true', he means that Democritus' goal in inquiry is to offer explanations of why things appear the way they do; to use Democritus' own language, he seeks aitiologiai or explanatory accounts of things which Democritus (born c. 460 bce —died c. 370) was an ancient Greek philosopher, a central figure in the development of philosophical atomism and of the atomic theory of the universe. Knowledge of Democritus's life is largely limited to untrustworthy tradition. It seems that he was a wealthy citizen of Abdera, in Thrace; that he traveled widely Leucippus and Democritus were the earliest Greek atomists. The originator of the atomic theory, Leucippus (fifth century BCE), must be considered a speculative thinker of the first order, but to Democritus (c. 460 - c. 370 BCE) must go the credit for working out the detailed application of the theory and supporting it with a subtle epistemology.
