Epimenides (flourished 6th century bce?) was a Cretan seer, reputed author of religious and poetical writings, including a Theogony, Cretica, and other mystical works.Religious theories of an Orphic character were attributed to him as well. He conducted purificatory rites at Athens, according to Plato.Stories of his advanced age, his miraculous sleep, his dealings with oracles, and his A plague ravaged the young city-state of Athens sometime around 500 BC. The distressed citizens sought help from a revered sage on the island of Crete. Arriving by ship, he calmed the people and Liar paradox. The oldest known version of the liar paradox (also known as the Epimenides paradox) was formulated by Epimenides of Crete. He was a Greek poet and prophet from the 6th century BC. The liar paradox is as follows. Epimenides once claimed that all Cretans were liars. The paradox is that Epimenides was a Cretan himself. But Epimenides refused the money, and only desired that a friendship should be established between Athens and Cnossus. Whether Epimenides died in Crete or at Sparta, which in later times boasted of possessing his tomb (D. L. 1.115), is uncertain, but he is said to have attained the age of 154, 157, or even of 299 years.
