Head to the Alamo. First built in 1718 and the most famous of the San Antonio missions, The Alamo (also known as San Antonio de Valera) began as a way station between the trail of missions. It will always be remembered for the Battle of the Alamo, fought March 6, 1836, when the structure was already nearly 120 years old. The Carnegie Library opened at 210 West Market Street in 1903 as San Antonio's first public library. The building was badly damaged in the 1921 flood and replaced by the Art-Deco structure that stands today.
