Videodrome was shot on 35mm film using Panaflex Cameras with the film receiving a brand new 4K scan and restoration from the original camera negative by Arrow Films - of both the full-length director's cut and the US theatrical cut - approved by director David Cronenberg, himself, from which this UHD is sourced.. The disc presents a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image, in the widescreen 1.85 However, Videodrome also anticipates the new, overtly philosophical turn that characterises Cronenberg's later work. More explicitly than his previous films, Videodrome is concerned with thinking through the terms of embodiment, and can be seen to offer a critique of Cartesian mind-body dualism, a philosophical tenet that holds that the mind is separate from the body.1 Videodrome I love Videodrome. I've consistently listed it in my top five favorite horror (ish) movies of all time. It holds up to and rewards repeat viewings, is visually arresting, and has some good performances and a compelling story. It's also a mind-fuck and not for everybody, which makes it that much sweeter. As someone who grew up with Romero and Carpenter, Cronenberg might just be my favorite. His body horror films definitely strike a nerve. That he played the bad guy in NightBreed sort of added to his mystique. If you were intrigued by the film, I suggest giving his film eXistenZ a shot as well. Sort of the same themes but dealing with alternate Videodrome is a masterpiece and shows just how far ahead of the curve Cronenberg was and, in many respects, still is. It's a disturbing film, but not just for the sake of it; nothing Cronenberg does is just surface level.
