I originally thought their relationship in the real world was justa metaphor for unhealthy relationship dynamics The Evil Queen who, after losing her war with Snow White, enacts the Dark Curse to give herself a "happy ending". In Storybrooke, she retains all her memories as Regina Mills, the mayor of Storybrooke.
