He was a big guy with hunched shoulders from long hours of work. For awhile he worked with the Forest Service felling timber and cutting hand hewed railroad ties. Through the mid-twentieth century, a significant pattern of migration occurred between Appalachia and the Pacific Northwest, with Washington's thriving timber industry offering compelling economic opportunities. Many workers and families from western North Carolina settled in the small mountain town of Darrington, Washington, frequently accompanied by their banjos and guitars. As a group of Nels Bruseth (1886-1957) was born in 1886 in Stanwood, Washington. He joined the United States Forest Service in 1916. He was a trail worker, then a lookout on Mt. Pugh. He later became a Foreman, and then the assistant to the District Ranger.
