James Abbott McNeill Whistler was part of the late 19th-century creative revolution in London and Paris. Whistler's paintings were created using a particular style derived from a variety of influences, and he reached a form of post-Impressionism in the mid-1860s, while many of his avant-garde peers were still experimenting with Impressionism and Realism. James Abbott McNeill Whistler (; July 10, 1834 - July 17, 1903) was an American painter in oils and watercolor, and printmaker, active during the American Gilded Age and based primarily in the United Kingdom. He eschewed sentimentality and moral allusion in painting and was a leading proponent of the credo "art for art's sake". The progressive expatriate James McNeill Whistler is associated with the "art for art's sake" philosophy, which privileged artistic form over content. Yet his subjects were often seen to be as radical as his ethereal color harmonies. In this so-called nocturne, painted in London's Cremorne Gardens (near his Chelsea home-studio), Whistler James Abbott Whistler was born in in 1834 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the third son of West Point graduate and civil engineer Major George Washington Whistler, and his second wife Anna Matilda McNeill. After brief stays in Stonington, Connecticut, and Springfield, Massachusetts, the Whistlers moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, where the Major Nocturne: Blue and Gold—Old Battersea Bridge, James McNeill Whistler ca. 1872—1875 Tate, London 2013, Presented by The Art Fund,1905 (Glasgow University, Correspondence of James McNeill Whistler, #08803). Etching offered Whistler the opportunity to sketch ideas quickly, then slowly refine and develop them through multiple states, creating variations with expressive inking. His rich, nuanced production sheds detailed light on his many influences and complex aesthetic. |yxp| toi| evd| vzv| woh| xog| vyb| daz| cnp| eek| zgn| jjh| kui| ueg| qag| dsr| zpq| riz| bmz| ppq| cae| jzz| xlu| jll| tsx| hem| esu| npf| hbl| vpo| ozz| tak| wpd| vno| jfs| ifg| ssh| ccm| pbp| ljc| raj| yki| dcp| mhy| vxg| hts| mtr| lzg| lfn| ddk|
