In this work, we report the production of the main ergoline therapeutic precursor, D-lysergic acid, to a titre of 1.7 mg L −1 in a 1 L bioreactor. Our work demonstrates the proof-of-concept for Ergot alkaloids are metabolites produced by a wide range of fungi, predominantly members of the grass-parasitizing family of the Clavicipitaceae. They are 3,4-substituted indol derivatives having a tetracyclic ergoline ring structure (Fig. 1). Based on their complexity, they can be divided into two families of compounds. The tetracyclic ergoline N,N-diethyllysergamide (LSD; LSD-25) is the most potent of the known hallucinogens and is shown in Fig. 6.A typical clinically effective oral dose of the tartrate salt is 0.10 mg, with effects lasting for 8-10 h.LSD is a semisynthetic material, prepared by the condensation of (+)-lysergic acid with diethylamine.
