Longbranch Pennywhistle were a Californian duo, consisting of John David Souther and Glenn Frey, who released one (self-titled) LP in 1969. It also contains strains of folk rock. It was released in 1970; the duo split up shortly afterwards. AllMusic's review of the album called it low-key and less commercial than the Eagles would be. Longbranch/Pennywhistle is a pleasant yet unthrilling album of modest harmonized early country-rock. Pre-echoes of the sound of the Eagles and 1970s mellow Californian rock can be heard, and Souther would re-record one of the better songs, "Kite Woman," for his early-'70s solo debut.
