RockFire is a unique combination of art, music and fire on a monumental scale, celebrating Central Vermont's colorful granite heritage all set in the evocative setting of Millstone Hill's abandoned quarries and granite industry ruins. First held in 2012 as a fundraiser for the preservation of Barre's Historic Quarry Lands, the buzz around The video takes you into the depths of the world's largest deep-hole, dimensional granite quarry, the Rock of Ages' "Smith Quarry" in Barre, VT. This quarry The Rock of Ages Quarry is the largest deep-hole dimension granite quarry in the world and covers approximately 50 acres. The Rock of Ages Quarry is a landscape of contrasts. Deep within its hard granite cavity, a pool of turquoise water rests, lapping against its pale gray walls. Not far away, a state-of-the-art plant produces headstones and Burtynsky's iconic photographs of the quarries of Vermont are explored within the context of the geological and social history of the area, including in particular the Italian immigrant stoneworkers in the granite quarries near Barre. This exhibition has been extended through early June in conjunction with Burtynsky's designation as an honorary degree recipient at Middlebury's 2013 The first commercial quarry in Barre was opened on Cobble Hill, operated by Robert Parker and Thomas Courser and owned by Pliny Wheaton. 1824: The State Gazetteer by Thompson declared granite "the principle rock" of the state. Mid 1820s: First quarry opened on Millstone Hill, owned by Abijah Abbott and later sold to Ira Harrington. The Barre Town Forest is unique among Vermont town forests for its post-industrial landscape of former granite quarries, the ponds created by them, the piles of leftover granite, and the immigrant history tied to quarrying here. Once a denuded landscape, the land has returned to woods and nature.
