Koonalda Cave was excavated by Alexander (Sandor) Gallus at various times between 1956 and 1968 and again in 1973. It quickly gained international recognition for its ancient artwork, witnessed as series of finger groovings on a series rock faces and for its flint mining. Both these activities took place deep underground in total darkness. Excavation was undertaken jointly with Richard VS Posted Wed 29 Mar 2023 at 6:00pm. Koonalda Cave is a limestone sink-hole filled with aboriginal rock art, which sits about 70 metres (235 feet) below the flat, treeless and burning hot surface of the Nullarbor Plain, South Australia. This crater-like doline contains several chambers including a main chamber similar in size to a sports stadium. This chamber, about 70 m below the surface, is huge, 60 x 90 m, and the domed ceiling is about 45 m above the floor. 2 passages lead from this main chamber, one of which leads to 3 underground lakes. Archaeological significance.
