The excavation is part of the Landscapes of Change - Archaeologies of the Rousay Clearances and Westness Estate project. The aim of the project is to explore the farmstead at Skaill from the Norse period to its abandonment in the nineteenth century. A UHI Archaeology Institute team will return to Rousay on Monday July 4th 2022 to continue The Westness area of Rousay has been described as 'the most important archaeological mile in Scotland,' for it spans settlements from the first Stone Age farmers, the Pictish Iron Age, the Viking invaders, the period of the Earls of Orkney, through to the mid-19th century clearances when 210 people were evicted from Westness and Quandale by 11. SKAILL FARM, WESTNESS, ROUSAY, ORKNEY: A MEASURED SURVEY OF A 19TH CENTURY FARMSTEAD. INTRODUCTION. The farmstead of Skaill (Canmore ID 351514) is situated on the west coast of the island of Rousay (Illus. 1) immediately south of the graveyard of St Mary's Church of Westness (Canmore ID 2281). The Westness brooch-pin was discovered by accident when a farmer was burying a dead cow in Westness, Rousay - Boat Burials. Excavations at Westness, Rousay revealed an ealier Pictish cemetery with a subsequent Viking cemetery which included two boat burials. A noust, or boat house was found to the east of the cemetery.
