Grunion are two fish species of the genus Leuresthes: the California grunion, L. tenuis, and the Gulf grunion, L. sardinas.They are sardine-sized teleost fishes of the New World silverside family Atherinopsidae, found only off the coast of California, USA, and Baja California, Mexico, where the species are found on both the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California coasts. The second hour is usually better. The best runs normally occur on the second and third nights of a four-night period. This schedule predicts grunion runs at Cabrillo Beach near the Los Angeles Harbor entrance. The timing of the runs varies at different places along the coast: San Diego runs occur about 5 minutes earlier and Santa Barbara runs California grunion were found to have a 16% decrease in larval survivability under projected ocean acidification parameters (Tasoff and Johnson 2019), which could be exacerbated by episodic events (Osborne et al. 2019). Larval California grunion were found to not have a change in growth rate under acid conditions (Tasoff and Johnson 2019 California grunion range as far north as Tomales Bay, California down to Bahia Magdalena, Baja California Sur, Mexico (Figure 1-1) (Love 2011).They are most common in southern California; however, they have been seen spawning on the beaches in Tomales and San Francisco Bays during El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) years (Johnson et al. 2009; Roberts et al. 2007).
