It is found along the western side of the mountains of Eastmarch; it is quite a distance southeast of Windhelm, and a short distance directly north of Cragslane Cavern . This ruin cannot be explored unless the Dragonborn has been sent here by Mirabelle Ervine to retrieve the Staff Mzulft. Mzulft is a large Dwarven ruin south-southeast of Windhelm, along the main road between Windhelm and Riften. Access to virtually all of the three-zoned main ruin is blocked by a locked door (which cannot be picked) until you begin the College of Winterhold quest Revealing the Unseen. It is the location of one of two Oculories in Skyrim i think patch 1.2 broke this quest. I am having this problem. I have the quest to go to Mzulft to "Search for Synod researchers". I go there, here I find a dead mage to the right of the door. He will not engage in conversation with me, he only rumbles on with one-liners. He also can not be harmed so thus can not be killed to loot his dead body. The Mzulft map marker isn't added by the quest as the scripting for it wasn't set up properly. Also, Gavros will not be in the entrance to Mzulft to give you the key. Updating the game to a newer version will not solve the problem for existing saved games. The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 1.0, fixes this bug.
