Most of us have at least a sense of how the Great Famine in the mid-1800s decimated the population of Ireland. Between 1845-51, through a combination of disease, starvation and emigration, the country's population decreased by some 2,225,000 people. Leitrim was amongst the worst affected counties. In 1841, Leitrim had 155,297 people; over Charles Reynolds (Cathal Mac Raghnaill) (c1496 - July 1535) Charles Reynolds was born in 1496 or 1497 in Mohill. By 15, he was a novice at the Augustinian Priory of St Mary in Mohill and became fluent in English, Irish and Latin. He opposed Henry VIII of England's separation from the Catholic Church, and in May 1535 he secured a papal promise MOHILL, a market-town and post-town, and a parish, partly in the barony and county of LONGFORD, province of LEINSTER, and partly in the barony of LEITRIM, but chiefly in the barony of MOHILL, county of LEITRIM, and province of CONNAUGHT, 8½ miles (S. E.) from Carrick- on-Shannon, and 74¼ (W. N. W.) from Dublin, on the mail coach road to Sligo; containing 16,664 inhabitants, of which number Mohill (Irish: Maothail, meaning "soft ground") is a town in County Leitrim, Ireland. One of Leitrim and Ireland's greatest footballers, Packy McGarty, was born in Mohill.
