Jeremy Dutcher is a member of the Tobique First Nation in North-West New Brunswick, and a classically trained tenor. He's a multi-instrumentalist, a Polaris Music Prize winner and a Juno Award winner, for Indigenous Music Album of the year in 2019. His latest album is called "MOTEWOLONUWOK" and it's available on Secret City Records. After winning the Polaris Music Prize back in 2018, Jeremy Dutcher is back with his long-awaited sophomore album, Motewolonuwok. He sits down with Q's Tom Power to talk about it. He became widely known for his first album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, which won the 2018 Polaris Music Prize and the Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year at the 2019 Juno Awards. Near the end, Dutcher asks: "And if I go too, will I see the ones we've lost? / Life is over before it's begun / Ancestors too young." A primal scream from a trumpet signals a plea for the pain to Jeremy Dutcher is known for his serious and politically searing art, but during a recent photo shoot in Toronto, he radiated a warm, playful charisma.
