Cultivation. Grow in any moisture-retentive, well-drained soil in a sheltered position. Leaf colour is best in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated if soil is reliably moist. Leaf scorch can be caused by lack of soil moisture or excessive exposure. See Japanese maples cultivation. Noted for its reliability and distinctive foliage color, Acer palmatum 'Dissectum Atropurpureum' is a slow-growing deciduous shrub with an elegant, broad arching habit and nicely contorted branches. In spring, this Laceleaf Japanese Maple produces small reddish flowers which give way to seeds. While attractive close-up, the flowers are not Acer. palmatum. var. dissectum atropurpureum. Pendulous form, some even prostrate and must be staked initially, cascading branches, becomes twiggy and dense with age. Leaves 5-13 cm long, divided into 7-10 lobes, each lobe divided further, they are reddish purple to nearly black-red early in the season, but the color may fade in summer, even Leaves are star shaped, 2-4" long by 1-3" wide with palmate veination. The fruits (samaras) tend to be in 0.5-1" in length and are very showy. The branching of this attractive Japanese Maple cultivar provides a weeping affect to the landscape. This variety holds its color longer than most other varieties of Japanese Maple, and is also one of the smaller forms. 'Ever Red' can handle more urban soils but prefers acidic, moist soils.
