Jon underwood

This episode is dedicated to the memory of Jon Underwood who died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 44 on June 27, 2017. I share an interview with Jon from 2015 about Death Cafe, why he started the movement, and his dreams of creating an actual Death Cafe in London. Thank you Jon for changing how the world talks about death! In early 2011, Jon Underwood decided to develop a series of projects about death - one of which was to focus on talking about death. Jon read about the work of Bernard Crettaz, the pioneer of Cafes Mortéls which were themselves inspired by the cafes and coffeehouses of the European Enlightenment. Motivated by Bernard's work, Jon immediately decided to use a similar model for his own project This time, the conversation was less personal but no less intimate. Instead of family, I sat with 40 strangers in Covent Garden, all of us taking part in a two-hour session specially created as a space to talk about death. It was a Death Café - the latest event in a new phenomenon that is spreading across the UK, led by Jon Underwood. Jon Underwood founded Death Cafe in 2011, and lived in Hackney, East London. Tragically, Jon died on 27th June 2017 at the age of 44 years old, leaving behind his wife and 2 kids. Jon worked extensively on projects about death. These included: - Death Cafe, group directed conversation about death over tea and cake.
