The Landi Kotal or Landikotal ( Urdu: لنڈی کوتل) in Pakistan is the highest point on the Khyber Pass, 1,072 metres above sea level. It is on a route across the mountains from the near-border city, Peshawar. [1] Landi Kotal is often visited by tourists and can be reached by road only. Landi Kotal is the main shopping centre for both the Bazaar of Landi Kotal. Landi Kotal is a small town, found on the way from Peshawar to the Afghanistan border town of Torkham. Located in the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), it was once known as the "Smuggling Market," known for trading goods like appliances and car parts into smuggled items like weapons and narcotics. In May 1919 it witnessed one of the first engagements of the 3rd Afghan War when the water supply to the post from the nearby settlement of Bagh was cut and The Landi Kotal Brigade was an infantry formation of the Indian Army during World War II. It was formed in 1920, for service on the North West Frontier. It was normal practice for newly formed battalions to be posted to the North West Frontier for service before being sent to Africa, Burma or Italy.[1] Landi Kotal Tehsil. Landi Tehsil is a subdivision located in Khyber District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The population is 274,409 according to the 2017 census.
